Bill 27, the Supporting Ontario’s First Responders Act (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), received royal assent on April 6, 2016, altering both the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, and the Ministry of Labour Act.
As it creates a presumption that post-traumatic stress disorder diagnosed in a first responder is work related; municipalities are required to provide all workers affected by PTSD access to services in a more efficient matter.
It is important for municipalities to ensure strategies geared towards their Fire Services, Police Services and/or EMS services are in place. This issue of Risk Consideration will look at tools that can be used for the benefit of your workforce at large.
