Volunteers play an integral role in every community and need to be engaged in meaningful work. However, it is very important that municipal staff responsible for supervising your volunteers is aware they are responsible for the safety and well being of your volunteers, and that your municipality owes your volunteers a duty of care. It is also important that volunteers are aware that they are representatives of your municipality when volunteering on your municipality’s behalf.
To ensure that both the volunteers and the municipality’s best interests are being achieved, we recommend that consideration be given to implementing the practices discussed in our latest edition of Risk Considerations.
